Shortcut Keys for Gmail

Using shortcut keys saves precious time and makes the headache of tackling email chores less daunting.   Instead of taking your fingers off the keyboard and reaching for the mouse to accomplish many formatting tasks, archiving emails, or simply deleting emails you no longer need or want simply use the shortcut keys below.   You will be amazed at how much time you can save by not reaching for the mouse!

I know what you’re thinking, “I don’t have time to learn something new, or I will never be able to remember all of the shortcut keys, why bother.”  I understand, I thought the same way until one day I needed to bold a sentence in an email I was composing, and remembered ctrl  B (cmd  B for macs ) would bold the sentence.  I decided to give it a try, and was amazed at how easy it was; I never had to take my fingers off the keyboard and my thought process wasn’t interrupted by reaching for the mouse.  Right then and there I decided to commit to memory one shortcut key a week.

Below are some of the most common shortcut keys that will save you time. But Wait, you have to turn on the shortcut feature in Gmail first.

  1. Click the mail_gear.png gear in the top-right corner of Gmail and select Settings.
  2. Under the “General” tab, find the “Keyboard shortcuts” section and select Keyboard shortcuts on.
  3. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
  1. Go back to Settings, click on the “Labs” tab, find “Custom keyboard shortcuts” (by Alan S) and click Enable.
  2. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
