Your Hard drive will die
It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.
Never buy a refurbished hard drive it’s carelessness.
Drives should be seen as units that last 3-4 years. When year three comes people need to be testing their backups and making sure everything they need is there. Too many times people have come to us saying they have a backup and that they backup regularly. Unfortunately, things are missing or the backup has failed as well. Everything has an expiration date and they need to be considered.
I’m a firm believer in the 321 rule when it comes to computers.
- Have at least three copies of your data.
- Store the copies on two different media platforms.
- Keep one backup copy offsite.
The first media platform can be your computer. The second media platform should be an external drive that is kept on location. And for the third media platform, one should consider using a cloud backup solution; and not a cloud storage such as Dropbox (more on that later).
By following this rule and always trust and verify your backups, your data should be safe.
If you have a folder name Red and in that folder let’s say you have the following files blue, green, and orange. So folder red has 3 files. That means if you check your backups, that folder better have 3 files with those names. This is the trust and verify method. This can be time-consuming but if there is data you can’t live without, you need to develop this practice.
