Email Makes a Comeback

Email isn’t what it used to be…or is it? We are so dependent on email that is mostly a dinosaur due to its age. We still rely on protocols that were used over their development in the previous century since its inception in 1969.

Enter in COVID-19. With employees working from home, everyone has come to realize that email is really the communication tool of choice. Email is starting to revitalize itself, and small businesses are starting to try new things in technology.

Email is built on an open platform. This does pose its problems, however. It is not an easy task to modernize email without getting universal buy-in from all the parties involved. This is what led to closed systems like WhatsApp, Slack, or Microsoft teams to develop their messaging and chat options to thwart off the lengthy email threads that can occur.

Love it or hate it, email is still the central location for our communication needs in our personal and business lives. You most likely contact your potential client first by email. When it comes time to file month-end expenses, you check your email first, right? We use email communication to contact other companies on a routine basis.

Business Concerns Regarding Email

So what needs to happen? First, email needs to be revamped into a more useful and modern communication tool that will be simple but powerful…and secure. That is why you are seeing an increase in the newest buzzword in the B2B world which is email communication.

As a matter of fact, Gartner considers security to be of critical importance. Here are just a few items they highlight in their page:

>  Email continues to be the #1 attacked vector by cybercriminals.
>  95% of attacks leverage email
>  Everyone needs advanced threat intelligence to be safe.

Now, I consider Gartner to be the best of the best in compiling useful information and reports for people in IT, finance, HR, customer service and support and so much more. So, I do not drop their name lightly. Now, let’s lightly touch on the need for email communication for personal use.

Personal Concerns Regarding Email Communication

So, what’s in it for you, the work at home enthusiast, the retired, or the senior? Surely, you do not think I forgot you as to just how important email is? There are reports from 2019 that there were roughly 3.9 billion email active users worldwide at the start of 2019.  I saw in one place that it might be around 4.3 billion by 2022.
