Privacy-focused Messaging App

People send messages in all sorts of ways to communicate with each other. Probably one of the best messaging apps is Signal. But just what is a privacy-focused messaging app?

According to Hubspot, picture a messaging app being a chat and messaging product. You can connect with other individuals using your computer or mobile device with known names like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat or Slack.

Privacy-focused Messaging Background

According to Wikipedia, Signal was developed by Signal Foundation and Signal Messaging LLC with the initial release being in 2014.

The beauty of Signal is that it is all about security for end-to-end encryption. What this means is that you can have communication with someone else and have that conversation be totally private.

Features of Signal Encrypted Messaging App

Signal privacy-focused messaging app permits users to call other Signal users to make both one-to-one voice calls, as well as video calls. Those other Signal users can be on an Android, iOS, Linux, and Windows through Wi-Fi or a data connection. And conversations can be started and continued cross-platform. Except for data fees, Signal is free of charge long distance and internationally. Group messaging is also available.

When you are sharing, you are doing so securely with state-of-the-art technology using encryption. A lot of companies say they use encryption; but when it comes right down to it, they cannot measure up to Signal.

Signal is an open-source app that you can use to share texts, photos, videos, and voice messages. Oh, and don’t forget you can manage group chats too.

The commitment that everyone has at Signal is real. Their mission is to keep developing open source privacy technology. Their bottom line is that they wish to protect free expression and enable security throughout the world. Signal does look for donations to pay for development, servers, and bandwidth of an app that is utilized by millions for their secure, private and instantaneous communication.

It is not unusual for people to be a little bit paranoid nowadays when they need to give up their phone number. Signal does use your phone number but not in the usual sense that other companies do. They use it only to send you a verification code during sign-up and account registration.

To keep your phone number private, just use a a Google voice number to sign up. Apple users can visit their privacy settings within the app and turn off “Show Calls in Recents” to prevent your history from syncing with the Cloud.

Settings also include the capability to have messages disappear over time, or photos to disappear after a single viewing.
