Who Needs Windows 10 Pro
You are probably all aware of Microsoft Windows. You may even know about Windows XP, Windows NT, Windows Vista, Windows 10, and so many more. But when it comes right down to it and you decide to get Windows 10, should you get Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro?
Overview of Windows 10 Home
Did you know that it is estimated that around 90% of PCs run some version of Windows? For our discussion today, we are going to look at a comparison between Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro.
To start with, Windows 10 Home is the foundation layer that includes all the main functions you need in a computer operating system. One reason users of Home are so pleased with this operating system is because of its security features.
As an example, security features in Windows 10 Home include:
- Firewall and network protection
- Ransomware protection
- Device encryption
- Parental controls
- Windows Defender antivirus
Overview of Windows 10 Pro
On the other hand, Windows 10 Professional is the business version of Windows that adds additional features on top of Home. The additional features normally are only of interest to offices that need more data security and multi-user management features.
Windows 10 Pro offers several business management capabilities not available in the Home. These include:
- Mobile device management
- Group Policy
- Microsoft Store for Business
- Dynamic Provisioning
- Kiosk mode setup
- Support for Active Directory and Azure Active Directory
Why You Should Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro
According to PCWorld, there are a number of reasons you need to upgrade. The company actually started out with five benefits and then ended up with seven. So, let’s take a look at them individually.
BitLocker
First on the list according to Wikipedia, BitLocker is a full volume encryption feature included with Microsoft Windows versions starting with Windows Vista. It is designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes.
BitLocker is useful if you are traveling, even if just locally. PCWorld says that locking down your data is not 100% foolproof, but it will get you started. If a drive is encrypted, BitLocker will encrypt other files that are a part of it.
Remote Desktop Connection
Secondly, both Windows Home and Windows Pro can initiate remote desktop connections. The advantage of Pro is that it can be remotely controlled. Windows Home cannot.
Client Hyper-V
Following the two features above is Client Hyper-V. This option is not one that most business professionals are really interested in pertaining to virtualization. To explain, this is the ability to wall off a portion of your hard drive into a virtual PC, complete with its own operating system.
For some people, though, Hyper-V is perfect for enthusiasts who want to continue testing insider builds without risking their main system. This is another benefit of upgrading to Windows 10 Pro.
Microsoft Update for Business
Now you wouldn’t think you would need to think about comparing updates, would you? Windows 10 Home pushes patches to your PC immediately. You are able to defer installation for a few hours; however, you are limited by how much time you can wait. (According to Digital Citizen, this has changed. Now you can postpone updates, regardless of which version of Windows 10 you are using.)
Windows Domain
Think of Windows Domain as the fundamental building block of business networks. It controls access to network resources. Examples are file drives and printers. Sorry, Home 10 users; you do not have this feature.
Azure Active Directory Domain Join
Continuing on with our Pro features, if you want to be cloud-first or cloud-only, then Azure Active Directory (AD), is just for you. But if you are like me, you may have a problem remembering your login information to access enterprise apps. This can be problematic unless you have 10 Pro and Active Directory. Windows 10 Home does not have this option.
Windows Defender Application Guard
As well as looking at the other reasons for why you need Windows 10 Pro, another feature that this version has is Microsoft Defender Application Guard (WPAG). WPAG is your strong arm for preventing old and newly emerging attacks. By using this, your employees get protection while surfing the Internet.
In Summary
You are going to be the final person to determine whether you need Windows 10 Pro. The Pro features we have listed above are not all the reasons you may want to consider upgrading.
